College campuses and dormitories are frequently exposed to bed bugs

Between student housing, public transportation, libraries and classrooms there are many ways for students to be exposed to bed bug infestations.

BE AWARE

The number of people on college campuses allows for bed bugs to spread more rapidly. Bags can be exposed in lecture halls, on the bus, or in the library. All it takes is one student living in infested off-campus housing who returns a library book with bed bugs and suddenly there is a large infestation to be dealt with that can quickly spread from the library to the dormitories and beyond.

These infestations can affect students on campus and parents at home as students returning from the dormitories for the holidays bring bed bugs back with them. It’s important to be aware and take steps to prevent and treat bed bug infestations.

Preventing bed bugs on campus means being aware and taking precautions.

The most important items you will want to pay attention to are those that are potentially exposed to bed bugs. Backpacks and jackets that are set down in lecture halls or filled with library books are potentially infected and should be treated carefully.

The easiest way to treat backpacks and jackets is with heat – simply place them straight into a ZappBug Heater as soon as you return to your dormitory and let them heat for one hour at 120F.

This simple, quick treatment allows you to know that any bed bugs that were in or on your things are dealt with by heat treatment. The heater folds flat for easy storage underneath a bed between treatments for ease of use in small spaces.

If you suspect your dormitory is infested, or another dorm room in your building, make sure to alert an RA and heat treat whatever you can.
