Bed Bug Proof Mattress and Box Spring Encasements
- You must encase both your mattress and box spring. You probably want to avoid vinyl encasements because they don’t breath and can be noisy. However, vinyl encasements are cheap and are impermeable to bed bugs, so this is an option if you are on a tight budget.
Bed Bug Proof Pillow Encasements
- It’s not necessary to encase your pillows. It is sufficient to heat treat your pillows by putting them in ZappBug or putting them in your dryer on high. But we do recommend that you also encase your pillows, just for that extra level of reassurance.
Metal Bed Frame
- You don’t have to use a metal bed frame, but we do recommend it. Bed bugs are not great climbers and, in particular, it is more difficult for them to climb metal.

Pesticide Duster
- For spreading a lot of diatomaceous earth over a wide area (for example, when you are covering a carpet or floor with d.e.), a pesticide duster is useful. It’s not necessary, but it is helpful.
Dust Masks (for Diatomaceous Earth)
- Diatomaceous Earth is non-toxic . However, if you are spreading a lot of D.E. around and getting it airborne, then you will want to wear a dust mask, because getting any fine particulate matter in your lungs is not a good idea.
